I’ve been asked this question many times and over the last few years as I’ve discovered the beauty and drama of anime, I’ve even wondered myself! As a result of my own personal interest, I decided I’d write up an article that details which of the 16 personalities each anime character fits into. Disclaimer: As an MBTI® practitioner, I can’t really sit down and walk through the Myers-Briggs® questionnaire and assessment session with any of these characters. Typing fictional characters always relies on a lot of very careful guesswork, but it’s never 100%. If you have an alternative suggestion be sure to let me know in the comments!

Here’s the Anime Character with Your Myers-Briggs (MBTI®) Personality Type
ENFP – Kaori Miyazono from Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)
“If you can’t move with your hands then play with your feet! If you don’t have enough fingers, then use your nose as well. Whether you’re sad, you’re a mess, or you’ve hit rock bottom, you still have to play. That’s how people like us survive.” – Kaori Miyazono
Free-spirited and innovative, Kaori Miyazono from “Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso” captures many of the strengths of the ENFP type. Her free-spirited, rule-breaking musical style infuriates judges but also captures the admiration of audiences. In typical intuitive fashion, Kaori often skips over the details or historical interpretations of a score to focus on the overall theme/personal impression she wants to give. She doesn’t let anyone push her around and has the distinct individualistic nature of the ENFP. Her creativity, emotional authenticity, and energetic warmth make her a distinctive ENFP character.

Rebellious and innovative, Edward Elric captures the strong-willed, perceptive nature of the ENTP. He can quickly see possibilities in any situation and shows obvious excitement when it comes to concepts, theories, challenges, and difficulties. His creative, clever nature exemplifies his use of Extraverted Intuition and Introverted Thinking. He knows how to bend the rules at precisely the right time and his sharp, irreverent sense of humor is also something that most ENTPs will relate to.

Like many INFP anime characters, Ken Kaneki wants to stay true to himself. His greatest fear is losing his individuality and going against his moral code. While all personality types can relate to this to a certain extent, none can relate quite as strongly as the INFP (or ISFP). INFPs crave authenticity and personal freedom in every aspect of their lives. They never want to bend or break due to outside pressures, and this internal struggle is what burdens Ken Kaneki throughout most of Tokyo Ghoul. Gentle, shy, and altruistic, he does whatever he can to protect those close to him – even putting himself in grave danger for their sake. His soul-searching, deep nature embodies the ethereal, morally-conscious nature of the INFP.

Highly intelligent yet often underestimated, L captures the ingenious but often messy nature of the INTP personality type. People tend to underestimate him due to his disheveled appearance and lack of tact, but his analytical abilities and strong powers of deduction are astounding. In typical INTP fashion, L has a dry, clever sense of humor and an ability to connect the dots in complex situations. He’s driven by a desire to understand and solve mysteries, and many INTPs will relate to this hunger for discovery and truth.

Focused and deeply compassionate, Tanjiro is one of the best examples I’ve ever seen of a truly healthy ENFJ. He is driven by his need to protect his sister, and in fact is willing to do anything, even die, to give her another chance at life. His distaste for rudeness and his empathy, even for demons, will be relatable to many ENFJs. He has a unique ability to break through the emotional walls people put up, even those of the silent and mysterious Kanao. His foresight in battle and his commitment to his long-term vision over the discomforts of the moment show his strength of Introverted Intuition (Ni).
“You can’t win if you’re always on the defensive. To win, you have to attack!” – Light Yagami
Hard-working and strategic, Light Yagami embodies many of the strengths of the ENTJ. He has an uncanny knack for mapping out scenarios, problem-solving, and organizing every action around his main goal: A new world free from injustice and populated only by kind, honest individuals. In typical ENTJ fashion, Light breaks down information out loud, organizing logical information and strategizing as his main weapon. He’s gifted at seeing what’s going on behind the scenes in a situation and tries to anticipate the future before executing his plans. However, like most ENTJs, he can be overly impulsive and get himself into hot water as a result.

Armin Arlert from Attack on Titan showcases the INFJ’s natural depth of insight and empathy. His Introverted Intuition (Ni) drives his fascination with the world beyond the walls, always looking toward a future where humanity could survive and actually be happy. Even as a child, his curiosity and long-term vision set him apart, despite being misunderstood and bullied. Armin’s quiet strength lies in his ability to see patterns and possibilities others miss, using his strategic mind to navigate complex, high-stakes situations. Though he struggles with self-doubt and his own physical limitations, his empathy and deep moral conviction push him to act, often sacrificing his own well-being for the sake of his friends and humanity. Ray from The Promised Neverland embodies the core traits of an INTJ with his strategic, independent mindset and forward-thinking nature. He’s always analyzing the bigger picture, planning far ahead to ensure survival, and using his sharp intellect to outmaneuver the threats around him. He knows the real deal behind Grace Field House before anyone else has caught on, and his plan far outreaches anyone else’s. This long-term vision and strategy is classic INTJ. Ray’s Introverted Intuition (Ni) drives him to see long-term possibilities others miss, while his auxiliary Thinking (Te) makes him methodical and focused on tangible results. His emotional restraint and occasional cynicism highlight his lower Feeling function, but he still deeply cares for his close friends, even if he struggles to express it openly.

Carefree and adventurous, Natsu captures the impulsive yet clever responsiveness of the ESFP personality type. He lives for today, making the most of each moment and enjoying the rush of a good fight. But he’s not all brawn and no brains (or heart). Natsu is fiercely loyal and will go down fighting for his friends, even if the odds are against him. He is able to think quickly and use his surroundings to circumvent obstacles when he’s facing an opponent in a precarious situation. His humor, liveliness, and loyalty to his friends are all hallmarks of the ESFP personality type.

Almost no anime character can match the competitive, aggressive spirit of Katsuki Bakugo. He’s a character of restless energy and nearly unbeatable tactical ability. Bakugo can think quickly in a battle, responding reflexively in ingenious ways to outsmart his opponents. In typical ESTP fashion, he commits to a challenge, using 110% of his energy to take down his enemies. While on the outside Bakugo might seem all brawn and no brains, when people see him in action they are surprised by how clever and ingenious his moves really are. He is extremely intelligent and perceptive, capable of not only strategic planning but quick improvising.

Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach exemplifies the core traits of an ISFP, particularly through his strong inner values and desire to stay true to his own sense of identity. As a dominant Fi user, Ichigo is deeply attuned to his personal moral code, which guides his actions, even when he claims not to care about strangers. His individuality is something he fiercely protects, as seen in his frustration when his self-image is compromised. Ichigo’s self-blame, especially regarding his mother’s death, reflects his internalized emotions and the weight he carries within. Despite his sometimes brooding exterior, Ichigo is empathetic, often showing compassion toward others, even enemies, because his values drive him to act when someone is suffering. His introspective nature, combined with his intense need to stay authentic, makes him a true ISFP at heart.

In typical ISTP fashion, he stays aware of his surroundings, even using tools in his immediate vicinity to bring down his opponents. His communication is direct and logical – he sees no point in mincing words with his enemies. He also can troubleshoot quickly in crisis situations that would make many other types confused or overwhelmed.

Caring, attentive, and people-oriented, Shirley Fenette captures the many strengths of the ESFJ personality type. She also seems to have a down-to-earth, practical outlook on life – often chiding Lelouch vi Britannia, who is much more risk-prone. At Ashford Academy, Shirley is often checking up on people to make sure that they are alright and is highly conscious of morale and what’s the appropriate or conscientious way to behave.

Aoi from Demon Slayer embodies the core traits of an ESTJ with her no-nonsense, efficient, and tough demeanor. She is strict and serious, taking her responsibilities at the Butterfly Mansion very seriously, always ensuring that tasks are completed with precision and order. Aoi’s dominant Extroverted Thinking (Te) drives her proactive approach, evident when she quickly silences Zenitsu’s complaints and demands he follow through on his treatment, prioritizing efficiency over comfort. Her directness and clear expression of emotions, whether anger or concern, showcase her strong sense of duty and straightforward nature. Despite her stern exterior, Aoi’s caring side shines through in moments of vulnerability, such as when she becomes emotional over Inosuke’s injuries, showing the warmth beneath her structured personality. Her insecurity about not being able to fight like other Demon Slayers speaks to her internal struggle with her own sense of responsibility, but her unwavering dedication to helping others reflects the ESTJ’s commitment to duty and support.

Rem from ReZero likes her life organized, planned, and meticulous. And her Feeling-Judging side shows up in how deeply she cares for others, especially Subaru, trying to keep everyone in a harmonious place, sometimes to the point of self-sacrifice. Though she sometimes appears infatuated with Subaru, this stems from her Fe-driven desire to nurture and support him. Rem’s inferior Extroverted Intuition (Ne) shows in her struggle to see new possibilities or outcomes, often reacting strongly based on past experiences, like when she initially sees Subaru as a threat due to the Witch’s scent. Her loyalty and devotion, even in the face of impossible odds, capture the essence of the ISFJ’s protective and duty-bound nature.

Detail-oriented and responsible, Tenya is one of my favorite characters in My Hero Academia because he always wants to do what is right. He may be a rule-follower, but he’s also willing to break the rules when it comes to protecting the legacy of the ones he loves most. He is deeply devoted as a friend and brother, and his discipline and hard-working nature make him a source of strength for his entire UA class. His detail-oriented perceptiveness enables him to notice when anything is out of synch or dangerous, and his pragmatic nature enables him to come up with strong plans of action when everyone else is panicking. His hunger for efficiency, his loyalty, and his attention to detail all make him a strong ISTJ character.

As a huge anime and MBTI person this article was definitely cool to read. Kaori from Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is interesting because of the clear character transformation that “turns her” into the the Kaori that the viewer is first exposed in the show versus what she was like before she met Arima Kousei and learned about her “future.” The MBTI is always about the transformation and development so using someone with such drastic change is always a great discussion for the MBTI
As I’m 31 and have been watching anime since I was 4, I loved this article! I’m not up to date on whatever the new stuff is so I didn’t know a lot of these characters, but I will say I always felt Edward might have been an INFJ – crazy, I know. I initially thought same as you, but I pondered on it and despite his flashy nature, he seems quite introverted. He also is very dedicated to his cause of restoring his brother’s body. He says it’s both of theirs but admits it’s really all just for Al in the end. There’s other things too but anyway, he’s a fascinating character!
I really liked reading about these Amine characters.

It often happens that choosing between these two types is difficult when analyzing fictional characters. Another example is Griffith in Berserk.

I have only watched Fairy Tail from this list, which I started a rewatch of just last week, I had finished binge watching The Expanse the week before and I then I got INTJ withdrawal symptoms from seeing on screen, so I went to Fairy Tail for some Erza-INTJ goodness 🙂

I always loved “Code Geass” watched it three times already, and waiting for a couple of years to rewatch it again 🙂 I also love its main character: Lelouch vi Britannia, he is the most brilliant hero/anti hero ever. You should watch it, it’s really amazing!
There’s also this movie that I watched recently and thought it was very good, “a silent voice”, it’s about “a former class bully that reaches out to the deaf girl he’d tormented in grade school, he feels unworthy of redemption but tries to make things right”.
This is a great article..I’ve been watching anime for 10 years now and I’ve watched over 200 different anime, including most of the ones on this list…My favorite one is Naruto, where he’s an ENFP, so this article combines two things I love. Thank you.
This list is fantastic! I like how Aang is an ENFP, he really gives off ENFP vibes, and I could relate a lot to him.
I was so sure that Naruto was an ESFP because he is always caught up in the moment, and he rarely second guesses his decisions, and he is so focused on one particular goal.

Naruto is a ENFP and his mind is always focused on the future and what he’s gonna do one day all the time. Most shonen MCs are ENFP like Goku, Gon Freecss and Luffy.
A lot of these are incorrect. I wonder why people get ENFP and ESFP mixed up, we’re nothing alike!

Tanjero is also an ENFP, not an ENFJ, does he sound like Almight or Rongeku?? No, he wants to protect someone he loves, not everyone. He isn’t seeking to be a hero just to protect his sister.

As a huge anime and MBTI person this article was definitely cool to read. Kaori from Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is interesting because of the clear character transformation that “turns her” into the the Kaori that the viewer is first exposed in the show versus what she was like before she met Arima Kousei and learned about her “future.” The MBTI is always about the transformation and development so using someone with such drastic change is always a great discussion for the MBTI

As I’m 31 and have been watching anime since I was 4, I loved this article! I’m not up to date on whatever the new stuff is so I didn’t know a lot of these characters, but I will say I always felt Edward might have been an INFJ – crazy, I know. I initially thought same as you, but I pondered on it and despite his flashy nature, he seems quite introverted. He also is very dedicated to his cause of restoring his brother’s body. He says it’s both of theirs but admits it’s really all just for Al in the end. There’s other things too but anyway, he’s a fascinating character!
They do say the ENPs are the most introverted extraverts though, and ENTPs are often mistaken for introverts, including by themselves.
ENTPs are also capable of having a goal – we just don’t approach it the way an SJ or any kind of J would.
Also, I don’t know if an INFJ would be irreverent. Maybe in private, but not openly – they seem way too socially acceptable for that.
Was expecting some Naruto characters though……they are fascinating and can be correlated with MBTI … especially Itachi Uchiha 🙂
I need to watch Naruto still 🙂 Once I do, I might be able to add some of the characters to this list 🙂

Very good article! I consider more Light Yagami as an INTJ, although I think it is possible to consider him as an ENTJ.
It often happens that choosing between these two types is difficult when analyzing fictional characters. Another example is Griffith in Berserk.

Have you seen any of the Studio Ghibli films? I would also recommend Natsume for an INFP series.

I always loved “Code Geass” watched it three times already, and waiting for a couple of years to rewatch it again 🙂 I also love its main character: Lelouch vi Britannia, he is the most brilliant hero/anti hero ever. You should watch it, it’s really amazing!
There’s also this movie that I watched recently and thought it was very good, “a silent voice”, it’s about “a former class bully that reaches out to the deaf girl he’d tormented in grade school, he feels unworthy of redemption but tries to make things right”.

This list is fantastic! I like how Aang is an ENFP, he really gives off ENFP vibes, and I could relate a lot to him.
I was so sure that Naruto was an ESFP because he is always caught up in the moment, and he rarely second guesses his decisions, and he is so focused on one particular goal.

Naruto is a ENFP and his mind is always focused on the future and what he’s gonna do one day all the time. Most shonen MCs are ENFP like Goku, Gon Freecss and Luffy.
Todoroki is a INTJ and Ni dom and Te aux user. Light Yagami is INTJ as well. Tenya Iida is a ESTJ and Te dom for sure, Si comes second for him.
