Here’s the Broadway Character You’d Be, Based On Your Myers-Briggs® Personality Type

I’ve been a fan of musical theater even longer than I’ve been into personality types. For some reason, though, I hadn’t thought about putting the two interests together until Susan asked me to write “Here’s the Broadway Song You’d Be, Based On Your Myers-Briggs® Personality Type.”

Today’s follow-up post is about specific characters from Broadway plays, one example for each of the sixteen Myers-Briggs® types. I’ve also shared a song for each of them. Hope you enjoy!

The Myers-Briggs® Types of Famous Broadway Characters

ENFJ – Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame

The Broadway version of Esmeralda is a strong leader devoted to the cause of other people. She’s deeply empathic and committed to creating a better world. Her intuitive side can see the promise of change someday, and she dares to imagine and pray for a world where hunchbacks, gypsies, and other social outcasts will be accepted by others.

ENTJ – Alexander Hamilton from Hamilton: An American Musical

Hamilton is a high-energy, incredibly driven young man. He’s relentless in his pursuit of a future that will let him leave his mark on the world and achieve success. Like other ENTJs, he’s able to take in a huge amount of new information and make quick, decisive choices. He’s a natural leader with an impressive ability to manage an army or country.

INFJ – Jane Eyre from Jane Eyre: The Musical

Jane is one of my favorite characters from literature, and this musical adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s novel perfectly captures the character’s personality. She’s a deep-thinking, passionate young woman who is deeply invested in the people around her. The better she understands them, the more she loves them. She’s also deeply committed to her beliefs and principles, and she cares about aligning with external expectations for behavior (in Jane’s case, the expectations of her Christian faith).

INTJ – Elphaba from Wicked

Green skin isn’t the only thing that sets Elphaba apart from the people around her. She also has a very different way of seeing the world and her strong Intuition (along with a logical Thinking side that lets her pick up on and call-out things which don’t make sense) lets her see through the wizard’s lies. She’s a private person who keeps to herself for the most part, but she’s also driven to pursue her ideas and find solutions to her society’s problems, even when everyone around her insists there are no problems.

ENFP – Christian from Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Friendly, idealistic Christian from Moulin Rouge! is full of energy and ideas. He’s a charming, romantic figure weaving fantastic possibilities for the future from thin-air. Concrete reality, social conventions, a lack of money – none of that’s nearly as important as following his heart and exploring possibilities. He’s probably an INFP in the film, but the Broadway production seems more extroverted to me.

ENTP – Dmitry from Anastasia

Dmitry lives in a world of unconventional possibilities. He raised himself on the streets of St. Petersburg and made it “his” city. He’s not sentimental about it, though, and quickly seizes on a scheme to get out. Dmitry says he, “learned to take my chances and use my head” at a very young age. He’s logical, clever, adaptable, and an accomplished con man. He also has a good heart, though, and ultimately acts for the good of the people he cares about as well as himself.

INFP – Cinderella from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella

The musical version of Cinderella’s character is a gentle dreamer who is most comfortable inside her head. She uses her imagination to escape her circumstances and to imagine a future that’s better than she has now. Her intuitive side is strong, but her Introverted Feeling is even strong, and that prompts her to always act in a way that matches her beliefs about right and wrong. In the updated 2013 Broadway production, the character is even more forward-focused and innovative, using her unexpected influence to change the whole world for the better.

INTP – Henry Jekyll from Jekyll & Hyde

Dr. Jekyll is driven by a goal that the people around him think is crazy. He’s absolutely convinced he’s right, though, and so he keeps pressing forward. Introverted Thinking (an INTP‘s lead function) is much more concerned with what makes sense personally than what outside evidence suggests. If you’re familiar with the story you know it doesn’t quite work out the way he intended, but I still think his focus, innovative plans, and unwillingness to get others involved in trying to solve his problems is something INTPs can relate to.

ESFJ – Glinda from Wicked

Like so many real-life ESFJs, Glinda knows how people work and what you need to do in order to get on their good side. She’s highly relational and also highly rational (though her rationale is based on personal criteria more than logical ones). She’s also invested in maintaining traditional institutions, even after she and Elphaba learn of the wizard’s corruption. She won’t betray her friends, but she also doesn’t want to restructure society.

ESTJ – Henry Higgins from My Fair Lady

Professor Henry Higgins is a confirmed old bachelor devoted to his work more than anything else. Though he lives alone, the inner world is not his main concern and he enjoys spending time with people who share his interests. He also wants to turn his social and linguistic theories into something with real-life application and publicly prove his detractors wrong.

ISFJ – Christine Daae from The Phantom of the Opera

Christine is a gentle, compassionate person with great empathy for other people, even the lonely, frightening Phantom of the Opera. She lives in a world of concrete reality that’s highly personal and rooted in her past experiences. Others might think she’s going crazy, but for her, it’s normal to have the angel of music sing songs in her head. Once she has an opportunity to change her life, though, she chooses stability and harmony with Raoul rather than uncertainty and danger with the Phantom.

ISTJ – Javert from Les Miserables

Stubborn, principled Inspector Javert wants to live in an ordered universe. He came from a less than ideal background, worked his way up on his own, and has absolute ideas of right and wrong. He does not pursue Jean Valjean because Javert is a villain, but because he firmly believes it’s the right thing to do and therefore the only course of action.

ESFP – Velma Kelly from Chicago

A vaudeville performer, Velma Kelly is a consummate actress who thrives on having an audience and enjoying the sensory side of life. Even while on trial for murder, Velma is focused on getting back on stage and she treats the idea of her trial as a performance. She also has very personal ideas of what’s right and wrong, and she acts based on those convictions.

ESTP – Frank Abagnale Jr. from Catch Me If You Can

This play tells the story of a real-life con man, check forger, and impostor Frank Abagnale Jr who (among other things) passed 2 million dollars in bad checks while impersonating a pilot, doctor, and lawyer between the ages of 16 to 21.I haven’t seen this production, but the soundtrack makes it sound like Frank is an ESTP just like he is in the film. He’s charming and quick-witted, excelling at manipulating the real world and people’s perceptions of him.

ISFP – Roger Davis from Rent

Roger is a passionate, creative person who tends to keep to himself and likes to spend his time making music. Often nicknamed The Artist, ISFPs tend to excel at creative pursuits. Pulling something real and meaningful from your soul isn’t easy, though, and he’s often melancholy and thoughtful. Roger cares deeply about his art, his relationships, and his personal values. He waffles between living in the present moment and thinking deeply about what things mean to him personally.

ISTP – Eurydice from Hadestown

Like real-life ISTPs, Eurydice is an active, skeptical, independent person willing to make tough decisions. An intensely practical character, Eurydice is initially skeptical of the dreamy, idealistic Orpheus.  All she’s ever known is how to hold her own, and she wants to know that real-life needs aren’t going to get pushed to the side. She’s not so practical, however, that she doesn’t get caught up in his vision, at least until she needs to make another tough decision to try and keep herself safe.
