21 Songs That INFPs Will Relate To
After writing a post about songs that INFJs relate to, I decided to start talking to some other personality types about their most relatable songs. I joined an INFP group and asked for their input, and I also went through Quora threads where INFPs listed songs they think embody what it’s like to be an INFP.
There were far too many song recommendations to talk about in this post, so I’ve compiled the songs on a Spotify playlist so you can listen to them all. One thing I noticed that set INFP song recommendations apart from what I heard from INFJs is that many said they enjoy instrumental songs. I didn’t include any on this post, but I did want to mention that and they are included on the playlist. Enjoy!

21 Songs That INFPs Will Relate To
1. “3 Libras” by A Perfect Circle
Several INFPs recommended this song. According to the artists, this song is about the people who are rare, precious, empathic, and willing to be vulnerable in order to connect. It’s also about the “cold and oblivious” people who disappoint others by not understanding or caring.
2. “Alive” by Sia
Sia’s music received more than one recommendation, but “Alive” was the only song mentioned specifically. It’s a rich and dynamic song that talks about finding solace inside your own mind and surviving against all odds. I think Sia, with her individualistic style, and deep from the heart lyrics, is an understandable icon of the Introverted Feeling types (INFPs and ISFPs).
3. “Creep” by Radiohead
This song comes recommended by three INFPs. On the surface, it might seem like a creepy, stalker-ish song. But when you listen more deeply it is (in the artists’ words) a song about “recognizing what you are.” The singer struggles with asserting themselves, then thinks about how that makes them seem weird even though they had no ill intentions.
4. “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac
INFPs care deeply about staying true to their authentic selves, and they care about others doing the same. Even if that means splitting up a relationship, it is right to live in a way that makes you feel free and genuine. Because of this, many find solidarity with this song.
5. “Dosed” by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Several INFPs said they liked this song, and one said it was their favorite from Red Hot Chili Peppers. It’s about heartbreak after the loss of a deep relationship and finding peace even though the past hurts.
6. “Exist for Love” by AURORA
One INFP recommended this song specifically, and two more said they loved the artist. This is a beautiful love song, and it mirrors the way INFP types say “I love you.” It’s a deep, romantic, “soulmate” love that honors the other person and promises to have their back.
7. “Help I’m Alive” by Metric
It’s not easy to have a soft, tender heart in this world and INFPs know that as well (or perhaps better) than anyone. NPR described “Help I’m Alive” as an “anxious yet optimistic” song, and it captures the feeling of learning to exist in a society that doesn’t always fit your personality or preferences. Other recommended songs from Metric include “Dreams So Real” and “Empty.”
8.“Leif Erikson” by Interpol
I hadn’t listened to any Interpol music until writing this post. INFPs recommended, “Evil,” “Lights,” and “Untitled” along with the one I’ve included on this list. This one captured my attention first because of the reference to Norse explorer Leif Erikson, then for the interesting way it talks about two people exploring and discovering themselves and each other.
9. “my future” by Billie Eilish
This song was recommended by two INFPs. One INFP also recommended “Everything I Wanted” by the same artist. “my future” is about embracing a hopeful future and moving into a happier place, choosing to care for yourself because you’re someone who matters. INFPs enjoy anticipating and dreaming about their futures and feel a strong connection to this song.
10. “On The Turning Away” by Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd received several recommendations, even earning the distinction of favorite artist for some INFPs. I chose this song for my post because INFPs care so much about fighting for those who are downtrodden and vulnerable. They’re not going to turn away from such things, and they encourage others to care as well. Other Pink Floyd songs that INFPs recommended include “Comfortably Numb,” “Welcome to the Machine,” and “Wish You Were Here.”
11. “Saturn” by Sleeping at Last
This touching song is about losing someone you love who shaped who you are today and taught truths that will shine on even after they’re gone. The artist has said that it is “perhaps written from Galileo’s children perspective” and that his goal in writing the song was to make it beautiful.
12. “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper
INFPs are deeply in-touch with their own authentic feelings. This familiarity with their own souls often gives them unique insight into other people as well. They also have the ability to help people find peace with themselves and show their true colors to the world
13. “This Is Me Trying” by Taylor Swift
This song is a deep, melancholy exploration of someone who is struggling with mental illness, addiction, or feelings of failure, and is trying their best, even if it looks small to everyone else. This song echoes with authenticity, meaning, and the pain and effort of getting through the day and trying to show others you care when you feel like you’re not “enough” on your own. This is for the INFPs who feel alone, misunderstood, or who feel like they’re constantly grappling with ideals and dreams that aren’t attainable.
14. “Imaginary” by Evanescence
Evanescence got a lot of votes from INFPs, but this song in particular. Amy Lee, lead singer of Evanescence, wrote this song about someone trying to escape their troubles and pain in the world of the imagination. She’s created a beautiful world inside her own head to escape the “nightmare” of the outside world. Many INFPs will relate to this genuine, heartfelt song about the draw of the imagination, especially when the outside world seems corrupt or so far from the idealistic world they wish existed.
15. “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance
I think this song is really an ode to Introverted Feeling and Introverted Sensing, two of the primary cognitive functions of the INFP personality type. It’s all about the triumph of the human spirit, fighting for what you believe is right, the beauty in your scars, imperfections, but the glory in fighting against all odds to carry on a legacy of meaning. This song is also about memories, the importance of remembering the people who meant something to you and carrying on their dream. All these messages will resonate with the INFP who longs for meaning, fights for their values, and works hard to be themselves in the face of a world that often promotes conformity.
16. “Free Spirit” by Khalid
This song is all about searching for meaning and adventure in life, rather than settling for the everyday and mundane. It’s passionate, filled with love, hope, and sincerity. INFPs who tend to prefer the untrodden path over the everyday and predictable will resonate with Khalid’s hope for something more, that restlessness to find “the fire.”
17. “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals
When I was researching INFP favorite songs, this song came up again and again in forums like Reddit and Quora. Although the song has a melancholy tone; breaking down the disintegration of a relationship, it also is filled with empathy, rich, colorful emotions, and the raw beauty of sadness and loss. The song is rich with bittersweet symbolism, rising intensity, and honest revelations (“You just need a better life than this, you need something I can never give.”)
18. “Innuendo” by Queen
This song is overflowing with Idealist (NF) messaging! Just look at these lyrics:
While we live according to race, colour or creed
While we rule by blind madness and pure greed
Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion
Through the aeons, and on and onOh yes we’ll keep on tryin’
Innuendo – Queen
We’ll tread that fine line
Oh oh we’ll keep on tryin’
Till the end of time
Till the end of time
The song later says that you can be anything you want to be, and then begs God for answers to the questions “we feel bound to ask.” The search for understanding, meaning, freedom, and individuality are all present through this song along with the condemnation of superficiality, pointless biases, and useless rules.
19. “Lithium” by Nirvana
Several INFPs mentioned this song to me (Susan Storm) in emails after reading this post. They related to the desperation and profound hunger in this song to “not crack” and to find some glimpse of meaning. This is certainly a melancholy song, with notes of spiritual longing, heartbreak, mental suffering, and anguish. Nobody is quite sure what the meaning is, besides Kurt Cobain himself, but INFPs seem drawn to the raw anguish, emotional honesty, and, of course, Nirvana’s solidarity with misfits worldwide.
20. “Find a Way to My Heart” by Phil Collins
This song got several mentions by INFPs, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a song urging someone to find a way to their heart. Collins admits he hides his heart, keeps it out of sight, protecting it until the right person comes along and finds it. He yearns for someone to find a way to his heart, whereupon he will be steadfast, loyal, and constant. The longing, hope, and optimistic nature of this song will resonate with the passion and yearning of the INFP type.
21. “Adagio in G Minor” by Remo Giazotto
INFPs enjoy classical music as well as modern, and “Adagio in G Minor” echoes the melancholy strains that tend to stir their spirits. Lush, sweeping, and deeply emotional, this song is one that perfectly pairs with a journaling session, a moment of self-reflection, or a contemplation about the meaning and beauty of life itself.

Imaginary by Evanescence is one song I think represents INFPs. Also, Enchanted by Taylor Swift, Something Just Like This by the Chainsmokers, and Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield.
These are excellent choices Lexi! Thank you!
Yes, I agree! I’ve always found Imaginary really easy to identify with. How about Hello by them on the same album (Fallen), too?
You would think no one over 40 was an INFP (sigh) … anyway, my favorite “INFP” song is Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel. It’s about him deciding to leave Genesis to become a solo artist, and how he struggles with being true to himself vs. his obligations. As classic an INFP dilemma as it gets.
Thank you Larry! I love this song!
Such a fun list, thank you!! I’m an INFP and am really enjoying these song articles! I hope you’ll do one for ENFPs soon! I have a strong ENFP underbelly and highly recommend including “Best Day of My Life” by the American Authors in that one! A friend of mine once told me that the song reminded her of me! It’s all about finding all of the joy and endless possibilities in life and is something I believe most ENFPs will identify with!! ^_^
John Denver songs: full of hopes, dreams, and yes, sorrows.
Les Miz: “Bring Him Home”
Josh Groban songs: many– very like John Denver’s songs. “Let Me Fall” comes to mind.
Pretty much anything by James Blunt, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran. Also Hauser’s awesome cello playing touches me deeply. I also have Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac on repeat a lot. It speaks to me about being true to myself and wild and free.
And “runaway” by aurora
Outsider by Will Young… and actually, most of the tracks from his album Echoes.

“WAYO” by Bang yedam
This song which actually identify my style as i am an INFP
the song is not English but when you see its lyrics its actually such a great song and the songwritter who is also its singer is an INFP himself so thats why this song is really great and i recomened it
I think that Doom Gothic Metal is so INFP, here are my favourites:
Hallatar: My Mistake
Draconian: Pale Tortured Blue
“Lazy Eye” by Silversun Pickups
Tells the story of someone who can’t focus on what’s expected/required of them, and instead wants to deviate from that pressure to follow their own ideals (their “lazy eye”). Yet they know their personal ideals run contrary to what’s expected of them, and struggle to accept this (“aim free but so untrue”)
Also Silversun Pickups is just an incredible band in general, with a really unique sound. I recommend the albums “Pikul” and “Carnavas” for their best stuff.
There are two songs that really resonate with my INFP personality – Sammy Davis singing ‘I’ve Got To Be Me’ and Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Am What I Am’. As you can probably tell from my choice, I am one of your senior subscribers and, after a lifetime of feeling like I don’t fit in I have been led to your website, and it’s been one of the greatest liberators of my life. Thank you.
I’m recommending free spirit by Khalid
My top songs: Peter Gabriel “Washing of the Water” – nearly destroys me every time (I’ll get those hooks out of me and I’ll take out the hooks that I sunk deep in your side”). Same for Radiohead’s “Let Down” (One day I am gonna grow wings – a chemical reaction – hysterical and useless – hysterical and let down and hanging around
crushed like a bug in the ground)
Never by mag.lo
I would deeply recommend “After dark” by Mr. Kitty — the lyrics might not make much sense (wich oa great because anyone can come with their own interpretation), but the instrumental is a whole trip. By the way, to all INFP’s (and anxious friends out there), try listen to lo-fi, ambient or just soft piano songs. Light instrumental songs can really help to turn off the outside world (or our inner flow of thoughts) when we need, well, you know, turn off!
Hello all co-INFPs!
Recently I have found two songs that have touched me deeply:
Losing me – Gabrielle Aplin, JP Cooper
Enjoy the ride – Morcheeba
I would say Manchild from the band Eels is a very INFP song. It’s incredible how I can find so much details of my own personality in this beautiful song. I also would recommend AM180 from Grandaddy. At first it seems you’re gonna listen to a happy song but when you listen to the lyrics, you can competely dream away and enjoy the feelings you’ll be having. Overall I think both bands are great and I think alot of INFP’s could enjoy their music.
As a infp I would recommend winter bear by v. The song is about the lost of a person you really loved and the wish to just see this person one more time. As a infp I love to listen to this song when it’s dark and I’m alone.
I recommend the song house of cards by bts. I like the song because the instruments are really nice and the singers have amazing voices.
I recommend the song intro:never Mind by bts because I love the voices of the rappers. The song is about how you should not care about the opinions of others. When i listen to the song it gives me confidence to just not give a f*ck.
I’d definitely say with you by jimin. His voice is so calming and I like the melody. I love listening to this song when I feel like crying, but I can cry, because the song makes me cry after listening for just one minute. I feel better after listening to the song and just letting everything out
As a infp I like to be alone and just let my thoughts take over. The song the astronaut by jin is perfect to do that. ♡
Son of a sinner by jelly roll…
Papa Roach’s Help. I don’t think a single INFP has ever not felt this way, like they are alone and drowning in their sea of whirlwind thoughts. Thoughts of shoulda, woulda, coulda always threaten to paralyze these caring souls with their vicious circles. I love that it makes the singer say, “I think I need help.” Oftentimes an INFP won’t admit this feeling aloud for fear of “bothering” someone. This song reminds me that at times it can be necessary and responsible
Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai
Lorde – Royals represents INFP very well as dreamers! We imagine ourselves as successful in our thoughts but not necessarily reality. And we’re ok with that.
Runaway by AURORA
this is me trying by Taylor swift
Indigo night by Tamino
Honesty, just about any song off of Nas’ Illmatic album. That whole thing is the definition of an INFP’s mind, personifying the struggle between optimistic and cynicism.
Literally anything by Purity Ring
Lovesong by the Cure
Who Wants to Live Forever by Queen. Immortality sounds great, but imagine losing every person you’ve ever loved, every pet, every home, even your country. You have to keep moving around so no one knows. You might meet other immortals, but invariably they move on.
Brahms Piano Intermezzo Opus 118, #2 in A major listening over and over frees me to cry when I can’t and then brings me back to hope.
Elgar’s Enigma Variations. Not just Nimrod, but the whole thing. There’s a measure in #2 (dedicated to his wife) where you KNOW – not just think – how he feels about her and it is pure, glorious, transcendant love of the kind that everyone deserves but few ever get to experience. The finale is hope, almost like a rebirth.
Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony, especially the 3rd movement. Just beautiful and moving.
Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Green Day. “I walk this empty road…” “Sometimes wish someone was walking with me…”
Wonderman – The Rasmussen
Escape from Reality – Trick or Treat
Rock and Roll Children – Dio
Misplaced – Sonata Arctica
Songs the Night Sings – The Dark Element
Storytime – Nightwish
The Neverending Story – Limahl
Guaranteed By Eddie Vedder
Born to Run by Springsteen, Just Like Heaven by The Cure, Learning to Smile by Everclear. I could name so many but these three were the ones that immediately came to mind.
Miracle Love -Matt Corby
Resolution -Matt Corby
Love thy will be done -Martika
Warrior – Aurora
Fire -Sami Yusuf
The Living years – Mike & The Mechanics
Earth Song -Michael Jackson
I recommend “Mitski – Washing machine heart” and Mitski’s song in general as it fits with INFP things very well
Black Eyes Peas ‘Where Is the Love?’
Alone in myself by Edguy. My favourite from your list is welcome to the black parade, always gives me the feels.
Any illenium song TBH, speaks to my INFP heart…. Or any Linkin Park song
Subdivisions — Rush
“Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone.”
Butterfly by Crazy Town
W hen we dance. Sting
Find your way Back Jefferson Starship.
Reflection by Christina Aguilera, from the Mulan soundtrack.
Never is a promise by Fiona apple
