10 Amazing ISFJ Anime Characters

Have you ever wondered which anime characters have the ISFJ personality type? As “The Defenders” of the type community, ISFJs are known for their compassion, practicality, and consistency. What do these characteristics look like in the world of anime and manga? That’s what we’ll be exploring today!

Disclaimer: As an MBTI® practitioner, I can’t sit down with these characters and give them a thorough typing consultation (wouldn’t that be fun, though?). These typings are based on information I gathered from the TV series and/or mangas, but, as with all fictional typings, they can never be perfect. If you have an alternate suggestion let me know in the comments!

10 Amazing ISFJ Anime Characters

#1 – Madoka Kaname from The Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Madoka Kaname ISFJ

“I might not be good at anything, but if I could help out people like you, I could be proud of the way I live. That’s the best thing I could wish for.” – Madoka Kaname

Timid and compassionate, Madoka Kaname will do anything to protect her friends. After she becomes a magical girl, she gains more self-confidence but still manages to maintain her altruistic personality. Like most ISFJs, Madoka is thrown off by unexpected events and likes to know what to expect and when. She often appears shy and timid, and unsure of herself and her potential. ISFJs who have inferior Extraverted Intuition (Ne) often struggle to see their potential if their gifts aren’t appreciated in the present moment. However, she is deeply understanding of people and tries to empathize with them as best as she can. Regardless of what’s happening, she strives to do right by others and maintain her deeply-held values.

#2 – Hinata Hyuga from Naruto

Hinata Hyuga ISFJ

“In my eyes, you’re a proud failure! When I look at you, I get an intense feeling in my heart…Because you’re not perfect…Because you fail, you have the strength to face your failure…I think that’s real strength.” – Hinata Hyuga

Polite and thoughtful, Hinata is often underestimated by her family, particularly her father. Throughout the Naruto series, we see her evolve from a timid and non-confrontational individual to someone who realizes they have great power and strength. Like most ISFJs, she hates being confrontational, but as she ages she realizes that it’s crucial for her to stand up for herself and her values, regardless of what other people think. You’ll often see ISFJs grow into their confidence as they get older and become more comfortable speaking up for their values and needs. Hinata takes her responsibilities seriously, whether to her parents or to her (future) children. Once she develops self-assurance and confidence, she is able to structure and organize her life in a way that is beneficial for everyone around her. ISFJs will likely relate to many of Hinata’s struggles, desires, and needs.

#3 – Historia Reiss from Attack on Titan

Historia Reiss ISFJ

“I may be humanity’s enemy, but I’m your friend, Eren. I can’t be a good girl and I don’t want to be a God. But when I see someone crying, saying no one needs them, I want to tell them it’s not true.”Historia Reiss

Deeply compassionate and loyal, Historia brings tenderness and stability to the world of Attack on Titan. She uses her gentleness to soften the hearts of others even in the most direst and violent situations. While Ymir calls her out for wanting to be seen as a good person, Historia also wants to actually be someone with inner integrity and selflessness. This prompts her to frequently sacrifice herself for the needs of others, sometimes to her detriment. Later in the series she puts her empathy and practical know-how to good use, building an orphanage and helping people in need.

#4 – Yachi Hitoka from Haikyuu!!

“If I hadn’t become a manager, I wouldn’t have been able to watch today’s matches, wouldn’t have been so excited and flustered, or so happy when you won, and my heart wouldn’t have felt so warm. It’s all because I watched each of you work so hard to do something you couldn’t before…If I hadn’t been here, I would have never had that experience. So, thank you.” – Yachi Hitoka

Cautious and kind, Yachi Hitoka thrives as a manager for the Karasuno High volleyball team. While she underestimates her value and struggles with nervousness, she excels at her job for many reasons ISFJs often excel. She’s practical, nurturing, detail-oriented, organized, and insightful. Like most ISFJs, she keeps meticulous notes about her areas of interest and watches everything around her with an attentive eye. Yet, also as many ISFJs, her imagination can make her fret about possibilities and negative potential in the world. Because of her insight into the Karasuno players, and her attentiveness, she manages to help the team work better together and build more confidence as a unit.

#5 – Berthold Hoover from Attack on Titan

Hoover Bertholt ISFJ

“What a strange feeling…I’m barely even scared. I can see everything around me…I feel like any outcome would be acceptable. That’s right…no one’s at fault here…Nothing could have made a difference. Not in a world…that is this…cruel.” – Bertholt Hoover

Bertholt is quiet, thoughtful, and compassionate. Like his companion Reiner, he struggles to cope with the double-life he’s been chosen to lead. When disaster strikes, Bertholt tends to stick with what he knows and one singular plan. It’s difficult for him to change his mind and he never loses sight of his mission. At the same time, he feels compassionately towards others even when he knows they are on opposite sides of a violent war. He intellectually understands other character’s perspectives while still staying the course on what he believes is right for humanity as a whole. He frequently analyzes situations in terms of what’s best for the whole of humanity rather than the individual, and he’s able to intellectually understand his enemies while still fighting them. At one point he says, “That’s right, nobody is wrong. There’s nothing we could do. Because this world is just that cruel.”

#6 – Gilda from The Promised Neverland

“I’ve wanted to say this since yesterday, I can’t hold it in anymore. If you’re not feeling well, you gotta tell us immediately! Listen, don’t keep going until you faint ever again, all right? Got it? You’re always too reckless!! It’s fine to be brave, but there’s no point if you die!” – Gilda

Reliable and mature, Gilda nurtures and cares for her siblings with an attention to detail that is second to none. Like most ISFJs, she’s cautious and gentle but can become surprisingly fierce when someone she loves is in danger. She can be especially intimidating when she’s confronting Emma about not taking care of herself and being too reckless. Gilda’s thoughtful, practical nature is a much-needed element in the plot to evacuate the children from Grace Field House.

#7 – Momo Yaoyorozu from My Hero Academia

“We should always start with the basics to develop the depth of learning. We must strive to devote ourselves wholeheartedly.” – Momo Yaoyorozu

Momo Yaoyorozu is a perfect example of an intelligent, ambitious ISFJ. While many ISFJs in film or television are described as nurturers and motherly figures, Momo is much more intellectual and take-charge. She excels when she has to sort through a plethora of internal data in order to create weapons from her own body. She’s highly competent and organized, but still has the hallmark compassion and warmth of the ISFJ. She cares deeply about what others think of her and how they are feeling. Level-headed and practical, she seems to be able to face nearly any danger in stride. For a teen, she seems very in tune to both the feeling and thinking sides of her personality. This is fairly common for IxFJs in mid-life, but not as common in adolescence. However, as Momo is an anime character, we’ll have to let that go!

#8 – Sophie Hatter from Howl’s Moving Castle

Sophie Hatter ISFJ

“When you’re old, all you want to do is stare at the scenery. It’s so strange. I’ve never felt so peaceful before.” – Sophie Hatter

Reserved and gentle, Sophie Hatter takes her responsibilities very seriously. Whether she’s creating hats or cleaning Howl’s disastrous castle, she puts 100% of her effort into what she does. Like most ISFJs, she’s diligent and nurturing, often persuading Howl to do what’s right for himself and others. In typical ISFJ fashion, she is rather timid in early life, but as the movie progresses, we see her learn to have confidence in herself and her own voice.

#9 – Retsuko from Aggressive Retsuko

Oh, hey! I’m Retsuko. This is my very first day of work, and I couldn’t be more excited about it! The things I’m gonna learn, the people I’ll meet, a childhood of hopes and dreams, have all lead to this moment! From now on, I’m gonna reach for the stars! The sky’s the limit!” – Retsuko

Aggretsuko’s Retsuko is a red panda who works in an accounting office. She’s dutiful in her work but can never seem to make her explosively aggressive boss happy. Retsuko lives a semi typical life with semi typical problems. She frets over letting down her friends, has some anxiety over managing her relationship with her mom, and some reservations training incoming staff. Much tends to weigh on her furry shoulders.

But when Retsuko finds karaoke, she finds a place that can hold the weight of her drear. She expels all of her anger by singing screamo music.

One wouldn’t guess by looking at her that she would carry so much raw energy inside her—as she, like many other ISFJs keep that in check—but her own disappointments and stressors pile up. Making herself feel “heard” gives her a release. Ever dutiful, once her scream sessions are complete, she heads back into the world where she accommodates at all costs. – Credit to Jami Cannon, 10 Fictional ISFJ Characters.

#10 – Nezuko Kamado from Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)

“Humans are to be protected and saved…I will never hurt them.” – Nezuko Kamado

Gentle and caring, Nezuko has the tendency to put other people’s needs before her own. In typical ISFJ fashion, she seems to be practical – not wanting to spend too much money on herself so that her family can be provided for. To be fair, it’s difficult to type Nezuko as she nearly always has bamboo stuck in her mouth so her lines are limited. I’m going with ISFJ off of very limited information, and mostly from what Tanjiro recalls about her more than her own thoughts and perspectives. I’ve also read quite a few of the mangas which give a little more depth into her character and seem to all point to ISFJ.
