Several years ago I started watching anime with my teenage daughter. At first, I didn’t expect to be impressed. With five kids I’ve seen enough “cartoons” that I figured it would be more of the same. Instead, I was swept away completely! I loved the art style, the dramatic music, emotional intensity, nuanced characters, and complex storylines. Here’s the Anime You’ll Love, Based On Your Myers-Briggs® Personality Type

ENFP – Naruto

“If you don’t like your destiny, don’t accept it. Instead have the courage to change it the way you want it to be.”

Naruto tells the story of a young orphan boy, Naruto Uzamaki, who desperately wants to become the Hogake (the strongest ninja in his village). Along the way he makes friends and enemies, and learns that the path to becoming Hokage is fraught with peril.

Why would ENFPs like it?

Frequently hailed as one of the greatest animes of all time, Naruto is all about going after your dreams and never giving up. Dismissed and ignored as an orphan child in his village, Naruto has to work twice as hard as everyone else to be taken seriously. ENFPs can often identify with Naruto’s plight and his vision. Enthusiastic and imaginative, they are driven to achieve their dreams no matter the cost. Yet because of their broad imagination and playful personalities, they aren’t taken as seriously as they want to be. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the story of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, who are trying to find a way to bring their mother back to life after she dies of a terminal illness. In the process they break one of the cardinal rules of alchemy and lose their bodies. Edward loses his left leg while Alphonse loses his entire body. To help Alphonse, Edward sacrifices his right arm and they bind Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor. The series follows their journey as they seek the Philosopher’s Stone in order to regain their bodies.

ENTPs love Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood because it is unapologetically brilliant. Edward Elric, an ENTP character, has the quick wit and irreverent humor (and argumentativeness) that makes ENTPs shine. He must use all of his ingenuity and wit to keep his powers hidden from the world, while still trying to blend in and keep a low profile. In the process, absurd situations ensue and his quirky parents and friends only make things more complicated.

Why would INTPs like it?

INTPs will find Saiki K. hilariously relatable. Sarcastic and deadpan, he is constantly annoyed by the people around him, who are either too loud, too emotional, or just plain dumb. He would rather be left alone to read or eat his coffee jelly, but instead he’s constantly surrounded by people who just don’t understand him and seem to want things from him.

ENFJ – Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer)

This is my all-time favorite anime, with one of the best ENTJ characters ever depicted on screen. He returns to Britannia under the guise of Zero, a masked vigilante who leads a rebel army against the corrupt Britannian Empire.

Why would ENTJs like it?

ENTJs will appreciate Lelouch’s brilliance and strategic genius. He is able to outthink and outmaneuver his enemies at every turn. He is also unafraid of taking risks, and is always moving forward towards his goals. ENTJs will identify with Lelouch’s determination and single-mindedness. Like Lelouch, ENTJs often see life as a chess game, and they are always planning ahead several moves.

INFJs will find in Norman, one of the main characters in the series, a kindred spirit. He is driven by his desire to save as many people as he can, and will do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. Like many INFJs he’s gifted at anticipating what will happen and planning several steps ahead of everyone else. Nothing can stop him from doing everything to protect the people he loves.

INFJs will also appreciate the series’ complex plot and its focus on relationships. The show is full of surprises and plot twists, which will keep INFJs guessing until the very end. They will also be touched by the show’s messages of hope and love in the face of evil and darkness.

INTJ – Death Note

INTJs will be drawn to the show’s complex plot and its focus on understanding morality. They will appreciate the philosophical questions that the show poses, and will enjoy debating the merits of Light’s actions. They will also be impressed by Light’s intelligence and strategic planning. He is always several steps ahead of everyone else, although the infamous L poses a particular challenge. Light Yagami and L’s dynamic showcases some of the powerful mind-play that goes on between two NT personality types. Light is an ENTJ while L is an INTP.

ESFP – Haikyuu!!

If you’re looking for an anime that’s high on energy and enthusiasm, then look no further than Haikyuu!! This series tells the story of two boys who join their high school volleyball team. Initially they are enemies, but their conflicting personalities help them to push each other to new levels. Personally, I really didn’t think I’d like Haikyuu!! After all, it’s a sports movie, and I notoriously despise them. But after I started watching it I was hooked. This series is filled with exciting action, hilarious moments, and some really lovable characters.

Why would ESFPs like it?

ESFPs are all about having fun and enjoying life to the fullest. And Haikyuu!! is definitely a series that knows how to have fun. The show is overflowing with energy and enthusiasm, and the characters are always striving to better themselves and push themselves to new limits. Shoyo Hinata, the main character, is also an ESFP, and his infectious personality is sure to resonate with other ESFPs.

ESTP – Cowboy Bebop

“Men always seem to think about their past before they die, as though they were frantically searching for proof that they truly lived.” – Jet Black

Cowboy Bebop is multi-genre series that follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters. They’re all individuals with their own dark pasts, and they’re searching for a place to belong. The show is full of action, adventure, and comedy, and its unique blend of genres makes it truly one of a kind. On one hand it’s a cool Cyberpunk story. On the other, it’s a space western. And sprinkled through it all is a cast of colorful characters that you can’t help but enjoy.

Why would ESTPs like it?

ESTPs are all about action and adventure, and Cowboy Bebop has plenty of both. They’ll also appreciate the show’s sense of humor, and its ability to mix genres in a way that’s both seamless and enjoyable. The main character, Spike Spiegel, is an ISTP, and Faye Valentine, a fellow bounty hunter, is an ESTP. The wit and banter between these two characters is sure to appeal to other ESTPs.

ISFPs – Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)

My Hero Academia tells the story of a young Man, Izuku Midoriya, who desperately wants to be a hero. He lives in a world where most people are born with powers, or “quirks” as they’re called. However, Izuku was born without a quirk. Jeered and mocked by his classmates, he still holds on to his dream of becoming a hero. Everything seems hopeless until he meets All Might, the world’s greatest hero. All Might takes Izuku under his wing and teaches him what it really means to be a hero.

Why would ISFPs like it?

ISFPs will enjoy the conviction and passion of the main character, Izuku Midoriya. Despite the odds being stacked against him, he never gives up on his dream of becoming a hero. The diverse cast of supporting characters are also memorable and lovable, each having their own quirks (no pun intended). This series really has it all; from gorgeous animation, intense, emotionally-charged battle sequences, and emotionally profound insights and interactions.

ISTPs – Attack on Titan

One of the most popular animes of the past few years, Attack on Titan tells the story of Eren Yeager, a young boy who dreams of one day exploring the world outside his walled city. But when Titans, giant humanoid creatures, suddenly appear and destroy his home, Eren must overcome immense trauma in order to fight for his life and the preservation of mankind.

Why would ISTPs like it?

Attack on Titan is an intense, action-packed series that will keep ISTPs on the edge of their seats. The show is full of suspense and surprises, and the battles are brutal and unrelenting. While Eren Yeager may not be an ISTP, the scout Levi Ackerman is one of the best ISTPs to be captured in the anime world. ISTPs will enjoy the battle tactics, strategies, and nail-biting action sequences in this show. Attack on Titan is a smart show, but it’s not so full of its own intellectual superiority that it gets dull.

ESFJs – Fruits Basket
