INFP or INFJ Test

This INFP or INFJ test can help you determine which personality type fits you best and feels the most natural to you. Because these types often mistype as each other, it can be easy to get confused! After all, most tests focus primarily on the letter dichotomies (I/E, S/N, T/F, J/P) so a slight preference for J or P could alter your personality type result in major ways.

INFJ or INFP – It’s More Complicated Than It Looks!

INFJs and INFPs have completely different cognitive functions. Their mental wiring is totally different in a multitude of ways. That’s why I’ve created this questionnaire to help you really clarify which type fits you better. This quiz is based on the cognitive functions rather than simply letter-dichotomies. I’ve looked at the INFP and INFJ interaction styles, their stress responses, and unique tendencies to create a more nuanced questionnaire than what is widely available.

The Cognitive Functions of the INFJ and INFP:

To understand the differences between INFJs and INFPs we need to look at their cognitive functions in detail. You can find out much more about each type in their type profiles, but we’ll get into some basics here.

Dominant Function of the INFJ: Introverted Intuition (Ni)

Dominant Function of the INFP: Introverted Feeling (Fi)

INFJs get in flow through foreseeing possibilities and getting in touch with the grand scheme of things. They want to sort out possibilities to try to envision the most likely future scenario. Delving into philosophical texts and conversations that focus on the “dance of the universe” get them excited and happy. They hone their Ni by reading books about philosophy, theology, or even science. They are more likely to read non-fiction than fiction because it can help them to assess future potentialities more fully.

INFPs get in flow by tuning into their feelings and values. They can do this through listening to music, watching movies, reading books, or journaling. Discovering who they are and what they really feel is vital to their happiness. Songs that give them a sense of solidarity recharge them. INFPs tend to like fiction because it helps them to delve into their feelings and imagination.

Keep in mind, you might relate a little to both of these qualities. But one should appeal to you more than the other on a day-to-day basis. Look at your life now. If you could listen to a heartfelt song or meditate about your future, which would seem more appealing on an average day?

Auxiliary Function of the INFJ: Extraverted Feeling (Fe)

Auxiliary Function of the INFP: Extraverted Intuition (Ne)

INFJs support their intuition with Fe. This function is all about tuning into the emotional atmosphere and sensing other people’s needs and feelings. INFJs enjoy creating harmony, getting other people’s needs met, and expressing their emotions with people who can mirror them. They can struggle to assert their own boundaries, however, because they’re so focused on maintaining outer harmony.

INFPs support their feeling with Ne. This function is all about generating possibilities, alternatives, and hypotheses. INFPs enjoy brainstorming with people, exploring nature, songs, stories, and movies to generate more ideas. They can have a hard time focusing on one idea because their mind naturally produces so many options!

INFJs are more likely than INFPs to get their feelings mixed up with the feelings of other people.

INFPs are more likely than INFJs to resist being labeled or grouped with other people, because they consider their emotional experience unique.

Tertiary Function of the INFJ: Introverted Thinking (Ti)

Tertiary Function of the INFP: Introverted Sensing (Si)

INFJs get relief with their tertiary thinking function. During relaxed times they enjoy categorizing information, hoarding data, or even playing strategy games. Using complex, nuanced language to hone in on their precise thoughts feels good to them.

INFPs get relief with their tertiary sensing function. During relaxed times they enjoy revisiting old memories, favorite songs, movies, or books. They might get a thrill from visiting their childhood home or reminiscing about the past.

Inferior Function of the INFJ: Extraverted Sensing (Se)

Inferior Function of the INFP: Extraverted Thinking (Te)

INFJs can struggle to see the reality around them because they’re so fixated on future potentialities. However, when they are stressed, they may suddenly become short-sighted, impulsive, reckless, and unable to sense the future.

INFPs can struggle to see the logical structure of their plans because they are so fixated on their feelings and values. However, when they are stressed, they may suddenly become hyper-focused on structure and righting wrongs.

  1. I have always got INFP on mbti tests, but my J-P scale is always very close to (and once exactly 50-50) and when I read things like this, I relate to both. I think I am an INFP… but… am I?

On this test too I got 57% INFP, 43% INFJ which once again doesn’t feel overly conclusive!

  2. I constantly fluctuate between INFJ and INFP depending on which test I take. This test was a 55% INFP 45% INFJ. After reading the difference between the two, I really think that I might just be both! There’s questions like would you rather meditate about your future or listen to your favorite song? Easy, I do both. Play puzzle games or watch old childhood movies? I’d like to do both ! I guess I’ll have to accept that I’m not completely one or the other. It’s frustrating, but I’m complex just like any other individual.
