The Importance of September for INFPs

A list of ways for INFPs to celebrate September in a way that aligns with their personality

September is a month of balance and transition, inviting us to reflect on our own cycles. With the fall equinox arriving on September 22nd, we witness the moment when day and night reach equal length. This balance between light and dark serves as a gentle reminder of the growth and rest cycles we all navigate in our lives.

Carl Jung, the father of typology, once said, “Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better take things as they come along with patience and equanimity.”

For INFPs, September can serve as a moment to become more aware of the contrasts within us. It’s a time to embrace both the light and dark sides of ourselves, understanding that grief is part of joy and happiness is intertwined with sadness. It can be a month to accept the ups and downs in life and find the lessons in them. At the same time, it’s an opportunity to open the windows wide, welcome the fresh air, and soak in the light and joy of a September sunrise; to cherish the positives in our lives and let go of the darker thoughts that no longer benefit us.

Just as the earth prepares to rest, we can use this time to acknowledge our growth, celebrate our accomplishments, and prepare for the quieter months ahead.

In many cultures, September symbolizes the harvest season—a time to gather and celebrate the bounty resulting from hard work and dedication. In Old England, it was known as “Haervest-monath,” or Harvest Month. This month allows us to appreciate what we have, shift our mindset from scarcity to gratitude, and take care of ourselves so we can continue to support others.

Connect with Nature and Creativity

Bucket list ideas for INFPs (taking a nature walk, writing a letter, celebrating the autumn equinox, reading a book, stargazing, experimenting creatively)

Take a Photo Each Day of Something Beautiful

Capture the beauty of September through daily photographs. It could be the golden leaves, a beautiful sunrise, or a cozy corner in your home. This is a fun way to tap into your creativity as an INFP and also get in touch with the beauty of the moment you’re in.

Toy with Colors Creatively

Even if you’re not an artist, play with colors. Paint, draw, or create digital art. The process of creating can be incredibly therapeutic and you may reveal insights, possibilities, and new discoveries as you intuitively explore emotion and art in the same moment.

Meditate

Find a quiet spot and spend a few minutes each day meditating. Focus on your breath and allow yourself to be present in the moment.

If you’ve never done this, it can feel a little odd or even boring at first. But slowing down, pausing, breathing, and calming your soul is one of the most vital ways to improve your well-being and the depth of your insights. Meditating can help reduce anxiety, enhance self-awareness, lengthen your attention span, and give you many other amazing benefits.

Take a Nature Walk

Go for a walk in a nearby park or forest. Notice the changes in nature as autumn sets in. Collect leaves, acorns, or pinecones to bring a piece of fall into your home.

Celebrate the Autumn Equinox

On September 22nd, celebrate the autumn equinox. Light candles, focus on how you’ve expanded and grown over the year, and take some time to think about endings and beginnings. What limiting beliefs could you let go of? What new possibilities can you embrace?

Light Candles

Lighting a candle and taking a moment to savor its warmth and light can be a simple, yet powerful act. It can help you slow down and appreciate the beauty of your surroundings. Try setting a goal to light a candle every day this month, whether it’s in the morning as you start your day or in the evening before bed.

Stargaze on the First Cool Night of Autumn

Find a cozy spot outside, lay on a blanket, and gaze at the stars. Reflect on the vastness of the universe and your place within it.

Fill Your Home with Fall Scents

Use candles, essential oils, or potpourri to fill your home with scents that evoke nostalgia and warmth. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and apples are perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere.

Focus on Personal Growth

Reflect on How You’ve Grown

Take some time to reflect on your personal growth over the past year. Acknowledge your achievements and areas where you’d like to improve. Celebrate your progress and set new goals.

Start a Gratitude Practice

In addition to World Gratitude Day, incorporate gratitude into your daily routine. Write down things you’re grateful for, no matter how small. This practice can bring more positivity and contentment into your life.

Explore a Random New Place

Venture out and explore a new location. It could be a nearby town, a new café, or a hiking trail. The sense of adventure can bring fresh perspectives and inspiration. It’s also a fantastic way to tap into your Extraverted Intuition.

Celebrate the Many Unusual Holidays September Brings

1. Write a Letter to Someone You Love Day (September 1st)

Kick off the month by writing a heartfelt letter to someone you care about. There’s something profoundly intimate about the old-fashioned art of letter writing, especially in a day when most people are used to getting an overload of texts and phone calls.

2. Live Fearless Day (September 2nd)

Challenge yourself to do something outside your comfort zone. It could be speaking your truth, trying a new hobby, or going somewhere you’ve never been. As an INFP, tapping into your intuition can be a powerful way to live more fearlessly. Ask yourself “What if?” when you feel afraid to try something new, and then imagine all the amazing possibilities that await when you go out on a limb and explore new territory.

3. Eat an Extra Dessert Day (September 4th)

Okay, this may not be very INFP specific, but it’s an excuse to savor the little moments in life that bring you joy. Treat yourself to an extra dessert. Whether it’s a slice of pie or a decadent chocolate cake, savor every bite. Instead of escaping into your mind, really ground yourself in your senses and be present with the experience. Taste every nuance, texture, and flavor in detail.

4. National Read a Book Day (September 6th)

INFPs are the biggest readers in the personality world, and it’s not hard to see why. Reading opens up the imagination, taking you to new worlds, experiences, and emotions. It allows you to go on a journey without ever stepping foot on an airplane. Dive into a book that sparks your imagination or teaches you something new. Allow yourself to get lost in its pages and explore the worlds within.

5. National Buy a Book Day (September 7th)

Visit your favorite local bookstore and buy a book that speaks to your soul. It could be a novel, a poetry collection, or even a journal you want to fill with your own thoughts!

6. Wonderful Weirdos Day (September 9th)

Celebrate your unique quirks and eccentricities. Do something wonderfully weird that makes you happy, like dancing in your living room, binging animes that people say you’re “too old” for (you’re never too old, by the way), or experimenting creatively in a new way.

7. National Day of Encouragement (September 12th)

Tap into your empathetic side and let someone know you’re there for them. Use this day to reach out to someone you love and let them know something you appreciate about them, a talent you’ve noticed, or a way you’d like to support them in their efforts.

8. National Wife Appreciation Day (September 15th)

If you have a partner, show them your appreciation with a loving gesture. Cook their favorite meal, write them a poem, or make a personalized playlist of songs that remind you of them.

9. World Gratitude Day (September 21st)

Start a gratitude journal and write down three things you’re grateful for each day. Reflecting on your blessings can help you see the beauty and promise of life and shift your focus to one of joy and contentment rather than scarcity.

10. Hobbit Day (September 22nd)

Celebrate the birthdays of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins by indulging in some cozy, hobbit-like activities. Have a hearty meal, go for a nature walk, or read and watch “The Lord of the Rings.”

11. National Family Day (September 23rd)

Find a way to connect with your biological or “friend family” today. Meet up for a bonfire under the stars, mull some apple cider, and create a low-key, intimate gathering that reinforces the bonds and connections that make life meaningful.

12. National Pancake Day (September 26th)

I know pancakes aren’t necessarily an INFP thing, but I firmly believe if you don’t like pancakes there is something deeply wrong in your world.

13. National Ghost Hunting Day (September 28th)

Get into the spooky spirit of the upcoming Halloween season with a “ghost hunt” or a scary movie night. Read some Edgar Allan Poe, write your own story, or go exploring on a “ghost tour” to treat your imagination to some (pleasant) scares.

14. National Coffee Day (September 29th)

Visit your favorite coffee shop and savor a cup of your preferred brew. Use this time to relax, reflect, and savor the moment.

15. National Hot Mulled Cider Day (September 30th)

Make a pot of hot mulled cider with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and apples. The aroma will fill your home with the comforting scents of fall. And cinnamon has been proven to boost creativity!
